Green man tour
Green man in Prague
Green Man is a sculpture motif depict on gothic architecture of Prague and other places in the Czech Republic and Europe as well. Most probably it has several interpretations. The motif protects against evil, it represents the power of nature and the power of evil too, it is a random décor or personal memory of the author. Its characteristic relief is a face partially covered with leaves, or three oak leaves are shown growing from its mouth.
” The Green Man is thought to be a being of non-human origin, but ghost of woods with affinity for not only the Celtic Goods but also Robin Hood and knight Fabián of Brdy Highlands.
The Green Man appears to warn us alike to help us. It expresses the unity of human world and nature that should be maintained. It symbolizes hope: it confirms that human mind cannot be separated from instinctive and emotive power of nature.” From a book “Roads of Green Men” by Vaclav Cílek.
