New Town
New Town was founded in 1348 by Charles IV the Czech king and emperor. Thus a specious area has been created which centre is today’s Wenceslas Square / Václavské náměstí, a formerly known as a horse market. It serves as a Prague’s main artery, the center of modern life both commercial and social events. “We’ll meet under the tail” meaning “we’ll meet at the statue of St. Wenceslas” the patron of Czech state. It was the venue of Velvet revolution in 1989 in November 17th. The revolution symbolized the end of communist totalitarianism. Dancing House / Tančící dům is the first contemporary building designed after the communist overthrow in Prague. National Theater / Národní divadlo and legendary coffeehouse Slavie designed in French Art Deco style, with an astonishing view of Vltava River, Prague Castle, Petřín Lookout Tower (Petřínská rozhledna), Charles Bridge / Karlův most.
Sights to see: Wenceslas Square, Lucerna passage, National Theatre, monument of Czech parachutists from WW II at Resslova Street, Charles Square / Karlovo náměstí, New Town Hall / Novoměstská radnice and Frantiskanska garden. Duration 3H/Difficulty level: easy.
